Inquiry Task #1: For your grade / course, identify the "generic" inquiry-based skills you currently employ with your students.
Competencies:
Knowledge : Students will demonstrate mastery of content knowledge covered in Physical Science. Science Depth of Knowledge: Level1: Recall and Reproduction
Laboratory / Inquiry: Students will use the process of scientific inquiry to collect, organize, and analyze data, information, and observations to develop valid conclusions. Science Depth Of Knowledge: Level 2: Skills and Concepts and Level 3: Strategic Thinking Inquiry Skills: Formulating Questions and Hypothesizing, Planning and Critiquing Investigations, Conducting Investigation and Evaluating Explanations
Problem Solving: Students will use problem solving skills to model, evaluate, and make predictions about systems. Science Depth Of Knowledge: Level 2: Skills and Concepts and Level 3: Strategic Thinking Inquiry Skills: Formulating Questions and Hypothesizing, Planning and Critiquing Investigations, Conducting Investigation and Evaluating Explanations
Inquiry Task #2: List the units that currently are taught in which inquiry skills appear. Topics of Study By Unit:
Q1:
Scientific Processes / Inquiry
Composition, States and Changes in Matter
Q2:
Motion
Forces
Machines
Q3:
Energy and Its Conservation
Work and Power
Electricity and Magnetism
Q4:
Electromagnetic Spectrum
Indirect Measurement
Solar System
Universe, Scale and Origins
Inquiry Task #3: Brain-storm ideas for how your current units or activities can be made more inquiry-based. Specific Major Inquiry Tasks By Quarter: Q1 - Alka-Seltzer Lab - Students design a controlled experiment, or investigation to test a hypothesis regarding the reduction of mass in a dissolving alka seltzer tablet. Q2 - Car and Ramp Investigation - Students design a lab to test speed as a function of either height/angle of ramp, or displacement from the top of the ramp. Emphasis on data collection and experimental design. Q3 - Circuitry Design Q4 - Scale Model of the Solar System http://www.education.nh.gov/instruction/assessment/necap/science.htm
Inquiry Task #4: Opportunities for applications of Engineering and Design within the course.
